The 2017 Leukemia Cup Regatta was held as scheduled this past weekend. Sailing conditions were, as they say, less than idea. But, as you have seen from Richard Wade’s email on the scores, the RC managed to get off three races for the 30 registered skippers.
The festivities began Friday night with burgers, hot dogs, and beer for a few regulars and those that arrived to help Barry & Tracy Hambrick set up the room. Registration followed Saturday morning, with lunch provided by Nelson and Kim Sharp. After a slight delay, the RC managed two races before sending the boats back for post-race festivities included that included rum punch, all the usual cold beverages, and hors d’oeuvres provided by several BSC members.
An estimated crowd of about 100 gathered for the Saturday dinner and the Live Auction. Dinner for the event was doanted by Taziki’s. For those that may not know, Taziki’s is a Birmingham-based, Greek and Mediterranean restaurant chain owned by Keith and Amy Richards that opened here in 1998. They now operate 69 locations in 16 states. Decorations and assistance with serving the dinner were provided by our Entertainment Committee chairs Jen Nix and Jackie Sprigg, with assistance from Jeanette Schuster and Chris Nix.
The Live Auction began at 7:00PM. Barry Hambrick was scheduled to be our Auctioneer, but was “taken ill” at the last minute, replaced on very short notice by none other than “Elvis” who was resurrected for this special event. Lord have mercy, you couldn’t help but feel the temperature rising when he entered the front doors of BSC!!
The King wasted no time in challenging the crowd to come with their best for a fantastic slate of items that included some very nice original artwork by our own Sally Johnson. By the time Elvis was finished and left the building, his hands were shakin’ and his knees were weak, but the Live Auction was a resounding success, raising $10,335!!! Unfortunately, I only have one photo of his Elvis on his arrival at BSC, as every time I tried to take a picture or video during the auction, I found I was upping the bid on something by $100. But there’s bound to be lots of photos and videos out there. Ask your friends. The Silent Auction also ran throughout the evening and raised another $2,000+, so the total for both, thanks to the generosity of BSC membership, was close to $13,000!!!!!!!!!!!!! The evening wrapped with David Reich presenting Logan Helms, our “Honored Skipper” along with his personal piece on the importance of supporting cancer research.
Sunday saw enough wind for one final race, and the LCR concluded with the awards ceremony. Fleet winners were Scott Mauney (Scots), Alex Krumdieck (Thistles) and Rick Scarborough (Open). The top three in total fundraising and donations were David Reich, Alex Krumdieck, and H. Mike Graham. Shown below with Regan Goldberg, Birmingham LLS Executive Director, and Logan Helms, Honored Skipper for 2017.
It’s important to close with a note that all registration, meal and T-shirt fees were paid to LLS as donations. Making this possible, in addition to Taziki’s sponsoring dinner, were Liz Pittman (pick-up and delivery of dinner) Nelson and Kim Sharp (sponsors of Saturday lunch), David & Beth Hardwick (beer & wine), Dave Hackney (other drinks, sailing award plaques), John Grainger (Sunday breakfast, tequila), and the LLS (Desert cakes, Sunday Lunch, Rum … lots of it!).
The Leukemia Cup started at BSC and is now a nationwide event raising millions for cancer research. BSC members know the message and as always, responded generously again in 2017. On Sunday morning, after all the donations, silent and live auction dollars and other proceeds were counted, the total was a few dollars shy of $34,000. Remaining to be added to the total are some additional funds from on-line registrations, funds raised by BSC members who were not able to attend, and any additional donations received by the end of the year. With these additional funds, we are closing rapidly on our 2017 goal of $40,000!!!!! Thanks to all that helped to make this event happen!!
